so I have a HP and had Vista pre installed.

Its knacked and I thought I would reinstall a new OS and start again. My brother sent me an legit unsed XP disc but it said only for upgrading and with a Dell. I thought what the hell and installed it.

XP works fine but there are no drivers, no wireless no sound, no USB drivers so all in all a bit usesless.

I thought I would get a new OS like Windows 7 and its only £70 from amazon .. but do I need the full or the upgrade only as I have a leit copy of XP?

Or can I just ge the drivers on line and use the XP

Please help.
Cheers

I should think you'll get the majority of the drivers online. Did you not get a Vista recovery disc bundled with the laptop?

When you installed XP did you do it in a new partition or completely format the existing drive?

I'm not sure on upgrading to 7 from XP, I think I asked similarly to one of the PC World blokes, his answer was confusing as he didn't understand the point I made that I know I can upgrade on my Vista rig fine and we got stuck in some Groundhog Day "No, I have two PCs, one with XP and one with Vista" "So you're using XP not Vista?"

Have you got the model/specs of you laptop at hand? Is the XP install fully updated? Is it connecting ok on a wired connection?

It's not seeing the talk talk connection wifi or with wire. Strand it sees my emergency 3g USB plug in connection though. Downloaded a full xp drivers onto a USB and will see what happens now. Like the idea of windows 7 though so may go for that.

Cometely fecormatted the thing. By the way. And yes vista came with some recovory and I couldn't use it. I gave up and wiped the thing.

Tried the drivers and no joy.

Will go and get me a copy of Windows 7 tomorrow as this is just too annoying to sort out.

DO you know if I need the full verison or can I just get the upgrade as XP is running on the PC and you have to do a clean install anyway.

New plan. Ordered a copy of full 7. Reformatted the thing and starting again.
